Seven years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the “The Phone of the Wind”, which has supported the hearts of bereaved families who lost their loved ones and those who lost their loved ones and had a feeling of loss, is in danger of corroding and collapsing.

Originally for indoor use, the wooden telephone booth was painted, covered with a roof, and used outdoors, which is unreasonable. In addition, although the foundation concrete is placed, the surrounding wetland environment is not good for a wooden box.

“The Phone of the Wind” collapsed in January 2015 due to corrosion of wooden fixed parts and strong winds, and was relaunched with the support of local volunteers. At that time, I cut out the corroded part and added a new material to regenerate it, but three years after that, the same situation became a concern.

In the first place, the concept of “The Phone of the Wind” originated from the idea that it could be used as a garden object when looking at the NTT telephone booth on the street corner. I thought it had to be made of aluminum. At one point, I negotiated to hand over the aluminum telephone booth with a white lattice that had been removed in front of the hotel in Kamaishi, but there was a history that I could not get it because it was scrapped. Due to such circumstances, we are using wooden boxes.

In the past days, while the number of users of the red telephone booth, which is a symbol of the United Kingdom, has decreased due to the spread of mobile phones and it has been removed in various places, efforts to remodel and leave it in small cafes and libraries are spreading. saw. It is said that British Telecom (BT), which is the main body of the installation, offers a service to sell to local governments and companies of their choice. Looking at this, I felt that there is a difference in the national character of thinking with Japanese companies, and in a big sense, that even old ones are used carefully. As is the case with gardens, even if you try hard to imitate an English garden in Japan and create a garden, the English spirit of “valuing things,” “using old things carefully,” and “respecting the appearance of nature” Even if you make it without understanding it, it is just an imitation. You can see that the English garden is just like that.

Nowadays, many people are killed by catastrophes, conflicts, terrorism, and accidents all over the world, and many people are deeply saddened. The feeling of loss and sadness of losing a loved one is common to people all over the world. Under such circumstances, “The Phone of the Wind” has gained sympathy from all over the world and is visited by many people. I think that the sensibilities and imagination of people, and the power of the “place”, including the telephone box, the atmosphere, the sound, and the smell of the place, will heal the feeling of loss of an important person. I can’t get rid of it now.

But the phone box is now in danger of corroding and collapsing. I think there are still some areas in Japan where NTT’s aluminum latticed classical telephone booths still remain. Many people were killed that day seven years ago. No one would have died in hopes. I should have wanted to live more and more somehow. That’s why I made an effort to live until the very end. However, when I learned that it wouldn’t come true, I think I died in prayer for the safety of my family. Also, the bereaved family would have wanted to say a word at the end. However, that wish did not come true and I left alone.

Why should a pregnant woman who is seriously pregnant have to be sacrificed? Why should a newborn baby be taken from the mother’s hands? Why do two people who are about to get married have to be swallowed by the waves? Why should a child carrying a school bag and looking forward to the entrance ceremony be sacrificed? Why should a person who has just built a new house and handed over the keys be sacrificed? Each person was at the height of happiness, but that happiness was taken away in an instant.

That day, the town was destroyed. Many bodies were lined up in the temporary detention center. It was a cold year and the flowers in the alley hadn’t bloomed yet. The bodies wrapped in blue sheets at the detention center were just lined up without any memorial service. About two weeks later, short-length daffodils, which seemed to shrink in the cold, began to bloom in the garden. A few daffodils and pussy willows were put in a cup and her wife put them in a camp. When 311 comes, I remember that day with daffodil flowers and tears.

“The Phone of the Wind” is a phone that conveys your feelings to people who can no longer meet. It was created with the hope that you will be able to communicate with your family, friends, and lovers again. The feeling of being able to connect with the deceased will help give dreams and hopes to those who have been left behind. The telephone line is not connected. “Thoughts may be connected because they are not connected.” That is the imagination of the heart and the power of human beings.

What is connecting feelings?

Have you ever imagined that the loved one you talked to a while ago suddenly died and disappeared from the world? Lost life cannot be regained by any means or effort. And when it comes to the fact that you can’t connect with that person after you’ve died, all that remains for those who are left behind is hopelessness. But if you can find the light of hope that you can stay close to you and be connected at any time, even if you are dead, how empowering will you be in your life? You should also understand that you need that kind of sensibility and imagination.

At the same time, the survivors will be close to the dead, and you will realize that you are living in the present as a living person. And I think that the sense of security that the deceased person is watching over you will heal you from the lost grief. I think this is what connects our feelings.

On April 29th and 30th, Bell Gardia KUJIRAYAMA will hold “‘The Phone of the Wind’ Music Festival” as a forest concert.

Seven years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, but many people are still suffering every day because they cannot get out of their sadness. In addition, many people are now being killed in large-scale disasters, conflicts, terrorism and accidents all over the world. The sadness of losing a loved one is universal. Under these circumstances, “The Phone of the Wind” is being visited by people from all over the world.

“The telephone lines are not connected. The feelings may be connected because they are not connected. I think that is the imagination of the heart and the power of people.” And the feelings that many people sympathize with. Is expressed in various formats in the work. Music, culture, and art with the desire to bring these works together and to promote “heart-to-heart exchange” (sharing sadness, cuddling, and supporting each other) among those who use the “wind phone” and sympathize with them.
